Mark Schultz Various Drawings Volume 5

Various Drawings Volume 5: front and back cover and flaps

Here's the new cover to Mark Schultz Various Drawings book. It's hard to believe, that we are on Volume 5 already. Because Mark was so busy with so many projects last year, there wasn't time to do a collection of his artwork. This should be a pleasant sight to the fan's of Mark's work. This, like all of the other volumes, will contain stunning illustrations that Mark has worked on over the last 2 years. Of course, included, will be a beautiful gatefold rendering.

I could go through an explanation of the process of creating this cover, but John Fleskes has already done that for me, so I won't post it here, as that would be redundant. So scoot over to John's blog at Flesk Publications, for a detailed description of the creation of this cover.

  2. Thanks Dominic, I certainly don't mind acknowledging my influences. The designers who contributed to the design style of Russian Constuctivism, certainly did it a lot better job than me. I love the clean geometric style, and continue to borrow from it for my own work. I think the original designers are pretty much all dead, so I'm hoping no one notices!!!

  3. Did any of those fellows also influence the art styles that were used in Soviet propaganda posters?

  4. Oh absolutely! It was such a great design period, they had such an understanding of space and weight and how to use type fonts as design elements. Computers in some ways, have handicapped designer into thinking everything has to have dazzling photoshop effects. You can't build a great house without a strong foundation, design is very much the same way. To me less is more. Think of the difference between Alex Toth and his simple elegant approach, and the dudes from Image, where adding more lines helped cover up their inabilities to draw dynamically.
